For many years, the Swiss watchmaking industry has been
busy examining new materials for application within the world of horology.
Cases were among the first areas of research and still are, with scratch
resistance or weight being prime motivators. This led to the application of
various types of ceramic cases being offered by several brands quite some years
back. But recently the industry's attention has turned to the interior of the
watch and the application of materials that have such properties as durability,
temperature resistance or no oiling requirements.

This
type of knowledge is far outside the scope and competence of all the major
brands, as such knowledge and development requires resources far beyond the
confines of pure watch manufacturing. And it also requires vast sums of money.
For these reasons almost all research into such new areas is done with partners
from the scientific and academic world, and different brands will frequently
work together behind the scenes and bundle their resources for specific
development purposes (although they will always publicly deny such activity
because of possible negative publicity).
