With a short film depicting male pilots dog-fighting over a sultry female, International Watch Company inaugurated its newest aviator watches, including its Big Pilot's, re-launched Spitfire and its Mark XVI, to great acclaim at the Geneva SIHH. Since we described those models in full in our previous issue (see International Watch, May 2006, pp.110-116) we will here focus on the down-toearth models this Schaffhausenbased manufacture has created for those who prefer to fly as a passenger rather than in the cockpit.
Most of the 2006 terrestrial debuts center on the firm's legendary Portuguese case. This design is a wristwatch that began with a pocket watch movement inside what was considered an oversized case two decades ago. For many, the profile and dial layouts of these models are quintessential IWC – after landing at the airport.
Three years ago, the firm launched the exceedingly complex moonphase edition of the Portuguese Perpetual Calendar, created in 44mm with a black dial and gold case.
The Portuguese Tourbillon
Mystère from IWC is now made
in a limited edition of 250 examples
in white gold with an elegant
slate-gray dial.
