Last year marked the tenth anniversary of the Patek Philippe "Annual Calendar,"
which has become the firm’s most popular complication. This new model, introduced last spring,
has a number of new elements that should be pointed out. The first is the arched Patek Philippe
signature on the dial in capital letters. I believe this is a first and I hope not the last time
we will see this.
Secondly,
we see the day and month apertures side by side just above the center of the dial sharing a single
wellplaced window. The date is at the 6 o’clock location. And finally, just above the date is
a multifunctional display showing the moon phases along with a 24-hour day and night indicator.
The dial
itself is absolutely Patek Philippe. Very readable, clean, classic and ageless.
According
to Patek Philippe: "As another tribute to the Calatrava legacy, the dial is inspired
by a historic 1930s model that occupies a prominent position in the permanent collections
of the Patek Philippe Museum in Geneva. With its double railway track scale, the well-proportioned
dial adds a subtle technical flourish to the Ref. 5396, and its graphic style will appeal
to design connoisseurs.
